Wasserman Schultz: Opponent’s Disarmament Idea Would Be Among History’s “Gravest International Security Disasters”

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz today condemned her opponent’s call for disarming the Middle East, including Israel, as drastic, dangerous and deadly for the Jewish state. Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz noted that her opponent has an apparent lack of understanding when it comes to the intricacies of Middle East policy and the realities of the existential threat Israel faces from its neighbors.

“The best way to protect American and Israeli security is to focus on disarming those actors who threaten it. Throughout my time in Congress I have cosponsored legislation to impose sanctions on Iran and its proxies for their use of weapons. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I have consistently voted in support of defensive weapons programs like the Iron Dome for Israel,” Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz said. “Given that Israel is surrounded by dangerous state actors and terrorist organizations committed to its destruction, disarming Israel is not only unrealistic, it would be one of the gravest international security disasters of our time.”

Middle Eastern states and terrorist organizations have pledged to remove Israel from the face of the Earth and destroy the United States. We must embrace a strategy that protects our security and that of Israel.

“The United States has critical security relationships in the region to protect our interests and our allies. Israel’s ability to protect and defend herself is critical for its existence and American interests,” Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz added. “Israel is the only democracy and our greatest ally in the region and our commitment to ensuring its survival must be unwavering, It’s irresponsible and naïve to call for the disarmament of Israel. That step would only embolden its enemies.”

Wasserman Schultz notes the evidence shows her opponent’s disarmament proposal has been a cornerstone of his campaign. Even if he tries to change his website, he can’t change his record.

He has repeated this stance multiple times including:

“My opponent needs to come clean. His call for disarmament is not a mere ‘oversight’ as he claims. It’s apparently a guiding belief that he needs to explain to voters,” said Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz. “While my opponent is all over the map when it comes to Israel. With my long-standing record of leadership and strong support for Israel, the people of the 23rd Congressional district know where I stand. I stand with the state of Israel.”
